Mega update of DOOOOM. well kinda
Ok I haven’t done a big update in a while, due to work nastiness and not having much time to myself recently. So here goes.
WORK
Well it’s been the major factor in my life at the moment, what with me working in a jewellery shop and it being so close to Christmas. Opening hours have been extended for a while, and I’ve been going in earlier to try and get things done before trading starts each day. Admittedly, I’ve not had the worst of it, as I’ve had nothing to do with the 5am deliveries (thankfully). In fact, its only been an extra half an hour in the morning, going from getting there at 8.30am to 8am. Although before, it was arriving for half eight to laze around till 9, whereas now its 8 and work through till opening, sorting out the special orders, filling up all the bags and boxes and stock etc. Closing time moved from 5.30pm to 6pm, with late nights on Tuesday (8pm) and Thursday (9pm). Although this week we’ve been open till at least 7pm on Monday and Wednesday too. In a kind of vague, manager appearing at about 4pm and saying “You don’t mind staying an extra hour do you?”. I’ve only refused once so far.
This week has been very hectic, busy from open till close, with people still trying to come in and buy stuff as we’re closing. We’re still not looking like we’re going to get any form of Christmas bonus though, as that requires us to hit target and more, and right now we’re not really getting there. We have to take a ridiculous amount of money tomorrow to qualify. But people have been off sick so wont be qualifying, which means if we do get it there will be more money as it will be split between less people. And of course Ralph (the manager) is off sick, Emma (ass. Manager) is also ill so isn’t very proactive management, which has left us with just Kathy (relatively new and funky supervisor) and Matt (kind of crazy weekend supervisor) doing all the managing. So we’ve had a right laugh really.
Still it will be nice when Christmas is over and it dies down again. I wonder what January Sale period is going to be like.
CHRISTMAS
Well I kind of feel prepared for it now, I’ve bought (and sent) all the presents I was going to, I’ve wrapped all of Beav’s family’s stuff, and of course the tree has been up since the dawn of time. Have no real plans for the two days I’m off, other than going to Wrexham on Saturday for Christmas dinner with his family (parents, brother and Nan). So looking forward to the official announcement of our engagement to them, and nice yummy, meat-filled Christmas dinner. The only downside is the sprouts, but I can get away with only having 4 or so. Once again, I feel it’s a shame that I’m not spending it with my family, but I did see them all last week I suppose. And Mum and Dad are coming up in the new year too. And I suppose its good for me to spend more time getting to know Beav’s family too.
LIFE IN GENERAL
Well the only major thing I’ve done other than work is go to Aunty Mary’s funeral last week (a week today in fact). The service itself was very good, the vicar doing it did a very convincing job of sounding like he knew the family really well, and since we were all kind of prepared for losing her, there was a less sombre, more jovial atmosphere to the whole thing. Which, when you consider who Aunty Mary was, suited the occasion very well.
It was an early start, granted, and there were lots of trains involved, which is never a good thing (bring on being able to afford a car!). It was really nice to see my family, as most of them were there. Saw my brother, and realised the last time I saw him was at Aunty Mary’s 85th birthday party in 2003. I really don’t see him enough, but then considering how little we have to talk about, it’s probably a good thing. Not that I don’t like my brother at all, but we lead very different lives, always have really. We have much less in common since going to uni. He hasn’t really changed much in the last year though.
Beaver did a wonderful job of meeting my family, and managed to pass himself off as being intelligent, sensible and perfectly capable of looking after me. Everyone loved my diamond. I got one direct “so when’s it going to be” from my Aunty Jen, who once I had responded with “Feb 2006 at the very earliest since we have no money” she said that money didn’t matter and we should do it now anyway. And Uncle Bill asked Beav if he was able to “..keep her in the manner to which she has become accustomed” which made me smile too.
On our way back to Chester we stopped off in Manchester to see Ben, and went for dinner in a strange Portuguese chicken restaurant called “Nandos”, where the food was fabulous and it cost us £20 for the three of us. Which we didn’t complain at. Manchester was wet, and cold, but we found a Travelling Man that we didn’t know existed and bought two new D&D books that we couldn’t get in Chester. And we saw that big French ferris wheel. I so totally wanted to go on it, but there was a small queue so I wasn’t allowed. It’s only a fiver to go on too. I wonder how long its staying there, it would be really cool to go on, I’ve always wanted to go on a huge ferris wheel like that. I solaced myself by taking photos of it with my phone. When I get round to it I’ll post them here.
