That's quite interesting. I saw a documentary ages ago that implied that alcohol consumption was a lot more recent, citing the fact that people of chinese / oriental origin have a high incidence of alcohol intolerant.
The theory given in the documentary was that in Europe, since pre-history unsafe water was made drinkable by fermentation meaning that over many generations those with an intolerance died out.
