I have been very well behaved this weekend just gone.

I have exercised, I have studied, I have bought food. I even did laundry.

To expand, for I wish to gloat about my exercising in particular:

I decided last week, when I was drawing up a study timetable for my ACCA exams in June, that unless I timetabled in windows of opportunity for exercise, I would never get around to doing any. I figured I would have to (initially) force myself into going and doing it, and provided the exercise I was doing was enjoyable (and more interesting than just going to the gym), I would grow to love it and not doing it would become unthinkable.

I think my past mistake was on relying on the gym and never doing anything else, hence why my efforts which started around this time last year to get fit have failed miserably somewhere along the way during the summer. So this time I decided to be different, and rely on activities I know I love and enjoy, with the potential to add in new ones when I have regained a certain level of fitness.

So, it started in October with the purchase of my new shiny bike, which I have been cycling to work and back every day since I got it (so about 3 months now), including through rain, snow, sleet, hail and having water bombs thrown at me (which was not fun). This has had the effect of making my legs better, but hasn't really helped anywhere else!

New plan was needed therefore, and it has taken shape now with swimming at the weekend. Due to the timetable of my local pool, this requires me to be up at 8am on both a Saturday and a Sunday! I wasn't sure I could cope with that, but I made it to the pool both days.

Bearing in mind that I haven't swum on a regular basis since I was in school, I wasn't expecting great things. On Saturday, I swam 28 lengths, which in a 27.4 meter pool works out to something like 760 metres. On Sunday, I swam 32 lengths, equivalent to about 870 metres. Which is a total of 1644 meters, which is just over a mile! yay! And my muscles aren't hurting really badly or anything afterwards, which is good, although I could really feel it using my upper arms and shoulders!

Now all I have to do is convince Jamie to come along with me as well, and eventually we shall be fit enough to take up something like badminton.

No swimming next weekend though, as off to MK for Russell's birthday, although I suspect ice-skating and tobogganing will provide more than enough exercise!
