Just in case you weren't sure how my total number of lengths was translating into distance, here's a visual aid!

Don't forget, you can sponsor me by visiting www.justgiving.com/tink-swim.

I've so far raised £54 out of my target £220 - mostly from people in work although I must say a massive thank you to [livejournal.com profile] rhube  for going online and sponsoring me even though she doesn't really have any spare cash - you are an absolute star! And it just goes to show, that it really doesn't matter how much you can spare, as long as you spare something! So please please please sponsor me. :-)

another 44 lengths today. seems like 44 is settling in to be my 'normal' amount. I need to start pushing myself more, aim for 48 as a minimum.

I also need to sort out my mp3 player so I can swim with music again.

44 lengths today, not quite the massive push I was hoping for as I got up late, but never mind. Slowly creeping back on target (I should be on 396 after today's session...)

Big effort today, need to get back into the habit. Must stop random life happenings getting in the way!

52 lengths this morning. And since I'm off work on Thursday, I'll have longer in the pool than usual when I go in the morning. I've just worked out, i'll have enough time to do 80 lengths!

Only 28 lengths today, pool was irritating and busy this evening :-( am still ahead of schedule though, so its not all bad.

Another 44 lengths today. Went at lunchtime, rather than in the morning. So no lanes. But less people.

A man called Alex was asking me about my swim - my bright blue swimming hat emblazoned with the words "Aspire Channel Swim" finally sparked some interest!

Another 52 lengths this morning. Am feeling pretty good today! I even found a different bus that goes all the way to the station, so drops me off a lot closer to my office than the number 17. So I don't have to hang around waiting for the 17 if its late (which it often is), I can just jump on the first bus that comes to the stop. Means I'll never be late for work.

So am well ahead of target right now, not quite to the stage where if I missed a session I'd not fall behind, but if I do another 50+ on Thursday morning then I'll be well on my way. If I keep this rate up, I will be done almost three weeks early! Although I do anticipate having to miss a session or two at some point, so its good to have this buffer set up already. I think getting behind on target would be rather demotivating.

Only 36 lengths this morning - pool was only open for an hour for lanes, and it was super busy! I'm still pretty pleased that I got up early on a Sunday morning and went swimming though.

another 44 lengths in the pool this morning. am feeling pretty good, especially now I've just eaten my breakfast!

Pool was hideously busy when I first started swimming, but by ten to 8 it had quietened down considerably, and when I was doing my last few laps there was only one other person in my lane. It's a shame I have to be out of the pool by 8.20, otherwise I'd stay later as the pool totally empties out for the last half an hour of the session!

Am hoping Saturday morning's session will be quieter - I mean who'd want to get up at 7am on a Saturday to go swimming!

off to a good start! did 8 extra lengths tonight. Pool was relatively quiet, which was nice.

Swimming!

Swimming was a success.

The mp3 player was awesome. Quite possibly the most awesome thing I've bought in some time, actually.

Got to the pool at about ten to six. By the time I'd got changed and sorted myself out and got in the pool, it was about six ish. I did my first few lengths in the medium lane (where I usually swim) but my arms were aching so much (from the gym on Tuesday) I moved to the slow lane. Then my goggles broke. So I had to get out of the pool and go buy a new pair, which took ages cos of the gaggle of students all paying to get in.

I then spent the rest of my swim in the slow lane, getting progressively more pissed off with the aforementioned students as they crawled up and down the lane in little gangs, constantly stopping and mucking about, and talking to each other incessantly. Seriously, if you want to do that in the pool, go in the public swim session. Adult lane sessions are for people who actually want to swim!

I had just over 40 mins worth of music on my mp3 player. I swam to it all, apart from the last three songs, so in all I probably did about half an hour. I could have done more, its just my arms were very achy and the students were really starting to annoy me. My hair is damp, but nowhere near soaking, and I didn't leave a nice pink trail behind me in the pool, so that worked a treat. My hair dye is washing out fast enough as it is (I am now on the ginger side of red), I don't really need the pool water to make it worse!

I am now waiting for Jamie to come home (he's been in London today) so I can have dinner, as I am starving. Fish and chips tonight, although its 'healthy' as its oven chips and oven cooked breaded fish from the supermarket, and frozen peas, as opposed to greasydeath fish and chips from Mr Cod. However, as I have no idea where Jamie is, I can't start cooking till he comes home. So I just have to cope.

Hehe not really getting off to a good start so far! Well, not as far as the No Sweets! No Chocolate! No Fizzy Drinks! side of it anyway.

Mind you, the first week of the year, back in work after Christmas, when its cold and dark and cold and snowing and icy and cold, with nothing really to look forward to for some time (December might be cold and dark and cold as well, but at least there is Christmas to look forward to), is not really the best time of year to cut out all the nice treats that make you feel better!

So while I haven't been all that pro-active in cutting those out, I have been a bit more proactive in making sure the rest of my diet is back to pre-Christmas healthiness. Although there isn't enough fruit yet.

Exercise-wise, I dragged myself to the gym on Tuesday evening, and while I didn't do a full work-out, I certainly did enough to make myself feel all energised, and for my muscles to get all achy yesterday and today! Swimming after work tonight, I've tested out my underwater mp3 and its awesome. I've got a playlist of songs which is approximately 40 minutes long, so we'll see how we go swimming to that. its a mix of Tom Jones, Chicago, Rammstein, The Hoosiers and the Shrek 2 soundtrack...

Whats not helping my poor aching shoulders, is that when I fall asleep I tend to end up in a position where one arm is out of the covers bent up over my head on the pillow, which in my room means it turns into an icicle in the middle of the night, so my shoulders are a tad stiffer than they really have any right to be.

Huzzah! For my performance management course is over. Four days in a row is actually pretty damn tiring. I am very glad my F7 course is structured differently (2 days next week, 2 days the week after). Much better.

Still, the hard work doesnt end here! Have to have done my Course Exam 1 by the end of the weekend (made trickier by my plan to do it on Sunday, forgetting that on Sunday I will be in Kent doing cat-things) so there will be much in the way of studying on Saturday.

I was going to do some tonight, but I'm exhausted. A combination of 40min swim on Tuesday, 45min workout on Wednesday and a late night both on Weds and Thurs. Also, my arm and shoulder muscles are in absolute agony. They were a little achy after the swim, cos I'd pushed myself quite hard. But following the workout my shoulder and wrist areas have been in agony. And then sitting in teh freezing cold air-conditioned room not really moving much has made it all really stiff. Am tempted to have a hot bath. Definately need to wash my hair tonight, so I don't have to get up too early in the morning, so a bath may be a good idea.

Today we are experimenting to find out where Fidget is getting his fleas from. Jamie combed him for about an hour last night, we drowned 22 fleas! Fidget has not been outside since, so when Jamie comes home he is going to comb him again, and if he has few or no fleas (there may be a couple we missed) then we can be certain they are coming from somewhere outside the house. If he's infested again, then there's somewhere in the house we haven't managed to get to. Personally, I'm sure its coming from outside.

Right, off to put some potatoes in the oven and feed the puss-puss.

My own fault really for staying up later than I should have done last night. I just didnt feel tired!

So I slept too much this morning, and have been gently snoozing all morning. Which is not good, when you're supposed to be learning!

I am aching a lot this morning as well, 40 lengths of the pool last night means my arms/shoulders hate me this morning! I tell you what though, finishing early does wonders for my motivation in going to the pool/gym. Take this evening for example. I will be home by 4.15 at the latest. In the gym by 4.30. which means I will be home again by half 5 probably, which is still earlier than a normal day, and as Jamie's going to the gym as well, I get two whole hours to myself in which to study before Jamie comes home and distracts me with food and fun.

Awesome. Wish every day finished at 4.

Gym things

So I had a cunning new plan, to make gym a more interesting place, which involved going to the gym and then going for a swim straight away afterwards.

Having made my plans, and decided that yes, going on Tuesdays and Thursdays like I did previously was the most convenient etc, I decided to check the gym and pool times just to make sure they hadn't changed.

Good job I did really.

The gym does circuit training sessions, but they are rather irritatingly on when I want to use the gym. which means on Tuesdays and Thursdays, the gym isnt available for general use until 7.30pm. Way too late for me.

Bah. It is available on Wednesdays and Fridays, however on Wednesdays the pool isnt available until 7pm, because of swimming lessons. Which means if I go on Wednesdays I have to make sure I'm in the gym till 7pm, which is kind of irritating.

I find it very irritating that the facilities are not available to me at the times when it is most convenient for me!

This week I will be swimming this evening, and then doing the gym/swim combo on Friday. Might go to the gym on Wednesday, just to check out the facilities etc.

So, I meant to go to the gym last night, I really did. Was all up for it when I was in work, and then somewhere on the walk home I think I dropped my enthusiasm, because once I got home I had just enough inclination to hoover the front room and do some exam practise for Tax, before collapsing in a heap and refusing to do anything else.

Swimming tonight though, I absolutely must go, for my arms are feeling 100% better after the climbing and I need to do exercise!

Yesterday aftermoon kind of slipped a little, instead of my nice healthy afternoon snack of carrot sticks, I instead guzzled down an alarming quantity of shortbread. Ooops.

Today I am back on track though (well, except for the hula-hoops I'm currently shoveling down) for even though I spent part of today's lunch money on coke yesterday, I successfully scrounged £2 off a work colleague and managed to pick up a nice baguette, me crisps and some buy-one-get-one-free Dr Pepper Zero (which is tasty nice and zero calories, yes I know its still bad for me, but one vice at a time, ok?).

Have been having an interesting few days in work, Tuesday we had massive power cut and system was down for ages. Yesterday we had total system failure in the afternoon. Today we had mini system failure this morning, but I've managed to keep myself busy until now. System is back up and running now though, so once I've had lunch I can actually do some work!

Day off tomorrow, which is going to consist of the following:
1. Nip down the canal and take photos of the swan's nest for Ro
2. Drive to Guildford and buy climbing gear - ostensibly we're just going down for shoes for Jamie, but I fancy we'll have a look at harnesses and things as well. we've got £190 to play with, so if Jamie's shoes cost £75 ish that means we should have enough spare to get harnesses from the cheaper end of the range (£50 ish each)
3. Drive to Wales. This is the biggie, as its a 4 hour drive from ours to Mum & Dad's. If we can leave by 12, we'll get there before rush hour starts, which is useful.
4. Spend evening with Mum and Dad. This will involve tasty food, some sort of wine, my beautiful little girl-cats who I don't get to see anywhere near enough of (its their birthday next week as well, they'll be 14).

Saturday is the wedding of excessive-having-to-drive-around-the-place, but it should be a laugh.

Then on Sunday we'll be having lunch with Jamie's Mum and Dad, and probably talking a great deal about the new kitten that they have decided to get. He's a very cute brown tabby, answers to the name... Rosco! After showing them pics of Caro's litter, they have fallen in love with the Maine Coon tots, and are going to be taking home a hillbilly :-) which is awesome.

Checked the IRB's world rankings today - Wales have jumped from 10th to 8th, and England have dropped from 4th to 5th.

Hahahahahahaha.

Scotland unfortunately have dropped to 10th, but given their poor performance I think we deserve to have switched places.

In other news, for le Rygbi is not the only thing going on right now in my world...

another half an hour last night, slow lane was nice and empty so I managed to do it all without much irritation. Have worked out that if I go on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday every week, and do at least half an hour each time, thats the "30 mins, three times a week" of exercise that we're all meant to be doing, isnt it. Add to that the cycling and all the walking and stuff, its all looking good :-)

Scarlets v Munster tonight - I'm getting all excited now. Wish I was in Llanelli for it to be honest with you.

But if I was, then I wouldnt be able to make it to the party on Saturday, so I guess its better to watch the game and go to party rather than just watch game and have to drive all the way to Wales and back!

swimming today - didnt keep count, but was in the water for around 35 minutes, which in my estimation (based on previous speed) is 36 lengths. so nowhere near as awesome as last time (only just over half a mile) but still better than nothing.

can't go tomorrow, as off to cardiff for the rugby (EDF Energy Cup semi finals - thats the anglo-welsh cup for those not in the know). its Leicester v Sale first off, then Ospreys v Blues. Jamie will of course be cheering for the Ospreys (and I think Sale, because his team have already beaten them twice and he knows they could do it again in the final), whereas I will be cheering for the Blues, being the region where I was born and all.

Besides, a Scarlet fan cheering on the Ospreys - unheard of!

I am so very proud of myself. I am going to shout it from the rooftops, I think.

This evening, when I got home from work, I decided I would go for a swim, as it was adult lanes from 6-8pm, and Jamie was going to the gym straight from work anyway.

I was challenged in work, when i made this decision, to swim a certain number of lengths. considering the most I have done in one session so far is 36..

This evening I swam 60 lengths. SIXTY!!! Thats like 1.02 miles, dude. Thats a long way. And I did it in 50 minutes as well, which means I'm getting faster, as before I was doing a length a minute. So I'm 10 mins faster than I was. Or something.

I feel all super healthy. I even cycled there and back.

I can easily do this 4 times a week.

Yay for me.
